In hopes of making the process less isolating and more rewarding, and of making the products more useful, she invited six of her students to work on their research together.


Each member of the group was investigating the regeneration of local economies, each exploring the use or potential use of stimulus funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act in a different post-industrial city.

The group met several times in the fall semester, and bi-weekly in the spring, to share their discoveries, learn across cases, troubleshoot research-related problems and to collaborate on ideas that cities could act on.

They also held two mini-retreats for which they prepared more formal presentations in advance, allowing for more detailed data and analysis and more thoughtful response. The students and their topics were: All of us recognized the importance of a regional economy for the cities we were looking at.

Things came up in my interviews that I would have overlooked, but talking to this group, it helped me pay better attention to the stories… Also I understood how to make this case more powerful outside the Massachusetts context.

She recognized the risks involved with a collaborative approach to research but because the group had collaborated as members of MIT Lawrence during the previous academic year, they had developed a successful dynamic for working together.

Hoyt says she considers this project the most rewarding experience, both intellectually and personally, during her time at MIT and hopes to try it again.
